I use travel mugs all the time. Whether it is taking the boys to their hockey/football practices and games, or bringing my daughter to her dance class, I love to have a coffee with me. I also always like to bring a coffee anytime we get on the road for a trip to visit family or the 2 hour drive to the cottage. Yes, I enjoy caffeine.
So, when I pour the hot coffee in the travel mug, I want it hot when I take a sip. I have gone through many different travel mugs and some of them have been down right terrible.
Thermos sent me their 16-ounce Insulated Travel Mug to try out, and let me say – I was impressed. Made mostly of stainless steel, both inside and outside, helps to keep the drinks either hot or cold. Also, there is a really nice and sturdy handle on the side, which is ergonomic and very comfortable to hold.
This travel mug has an interesting feature on the lid. Most have a flip cap to allow drinking, but this one has a button in the center of the lid to open and allow drinking or to close and lock it. When closed, the mug does not leak at all. I tilted the mug upside down and there were no drips at all. It is also nice that the button can be pressed with one hand – perfect for driving!
The lid is actually quite large and goes somewhat deep into the mug. I am sure that this helps with both insulation and sealing in the liquid.
The travel mug advertises that it is able to keep drinks hot for 5 hours and cold for 9 hours. That is impressive, but there is only one way to know for sure…..
a temp test!!
I wanted to test the travel mug to see how effectively it kept drinks both hot and cold. There is nothing more frustrating than filling a travel mug with hot coffee, only to find that it goes lukewarm in no time.
The Hot Test
- Starting temperature – 204F
- Temperature after 5 hours – 157F
The Cold Test
- Starting temperature – 34F
- Temperature after 9 hours – 53F
I was impressed with how well the Thermos was able to hold the temperature. Five hours is a long time and let’s be serious – we would likely all finish off that drink within that amount of time. That aside, it held the heat fairly well. The cold test showed that the travel mug is able to keep the drink quite cold for a long time as well. I do not personally use travel mugs for cold drinks, but it might be nice in the summer for an iced latte!
