Stromboli – with Ham, Pepperoni and Peppers

Ever since I have started this food blog, meal time, and the food being prepared, has gained greater attention by everyone in the household. It has been interesting watching the kids as they ask questions about the food and how it is prepared. B, my oldest son, has gained a strong interest in cooking over the last couple of months. Part of this interest has been the food blog, but another factor has been Australia’s Masterchef show – especially the Junior Masterchef. Masterchef in Australia is like American Idol in the United States – particularly in those first few seasons. Masterchef is a huge show there and it has a massive viewership.

A spinoff show to Masterchef Australia was Junior Masterchef Australia. In this show, kids 8-12 compete preparing various dishes. Janna and I were both amazed at what these kids were pulling off. Some were making pasta from scratch and others were tempering chocolate. These kids did a whole lot more than making ‘ants on a log’!

B loved this show and said to me that he would love to learn to cook and asked if I would teach him. He also asked if we could post the recipes on The Black Peppercorn. We have decided that we are going to start a series called ‘Kids in the Kitchen’. These will be recipes geared specifically with kids in mind. I will try to ensure that the instructions are kid friendly, so that, with the help of mom or dad, they can create a great dish for the family to enjoy.

Today’s recipe is stromboli. It is like a rolled up pizza without the sauce. Think of a jelly roll but with pizza crust and toppings. Sound good? It should ’cause it is delicious!!! It doesn’t have pizza sauce but we have a bowl of it and put some on all our plates to dip the stromboli slices in. All the kids loved it and B really enjoyed making it. I encourage you to try this with your kids!

Roll out the dough to 18×12 inch rectangle/oval. Spread the toppings on, leaving about one inch on the edges. Along one of the wider sides of the of the dough, pull and fold it evenly on top. It should cover around half of the dough and toppings.

Tuck and roll the dough and toppings again. This should leave just the edge where there is dough but no toppings. Pull that edge on top of the stromboli roll.

Pull, tuck and fold the two ends of the stromboli roll ensuring that there are no holes or gaps for the melted cheese to get out.

Brush the top of the stromboli rolls with the egg wash. Sprinkle the top with oregano. Bake in a 350F oven for 30-40 minutes.

    • It is such a great idea to encourage kids to cook, especially when they show an interest. Your oldest is only 3? So, you must have another then? A young group of kids… that is so great. I remember those days. Fun times!!
