Make Your Own Snow Cone and Slushie Syrup

It is officially summer and time to get ready for summer parties. Canada Day is a week away and we always have a big backyard party. There are a lot of kids that attend and they always love frozen treats, and what better than slushies, snow cones or shaved ice! I like to have a lot of different flavors available for kids to choose from, because picking the flavor is almost as much fun for the kids as enjoying the ice cold treat.

You can order flavors online and even buy some at some grocery or specialty stores. I was in a store recently and saw that Jelly Belly makes flavored syrups for snow cones and slushies. They were really pricey though, especially when you consider that they are just flavoring, sugar and color. It is really simple to make your own syrup right at home.

To make this syrup, all you need is 3 ingredients – Kool Aid unsweetened flavor packets, sugar and water. I made 6 different flavors within 30 minutes. I store them in mason jars, downstairs in a cool and dry place.

Make these and you can be sure that your next backyard party is sure to be a big hit!

  • I recently bought a slushy machine, and the syrup prices are really high.. I was hoping to make my own and would like some feedback! My machine is a double and holds 15L in each side!

HI Guys, You can use flossine to make you own slushy mix or syrup.
I purchase mine online is cost me about £2.50 to make a 4/1 mix that’s already weighed out in 16gm sachets.

    Here is the recipe.
    2kg Sugar
    1.5L Water
16gm of which flossine flavour you like.

Mix the water and sugar together and bring to boil.
Once bubbling then boil for 5 minutes.

DO NOT COVER / we want to loose a little water to thicken mixture.
Remove from the heat allow to stand for a few minutes before adding the Flossine.

Heres a tip: We keep back our used large hotdog jars, wash them out and put our slushy mix straight in and screw the lid back on. This also creates a vacuum when the mix fully cools and the mix can be stored somewhere dark and cool for approx 18months… Not that it will last that long…

So for every 1L of syrup you mix 4 L of spring water straight into your commercial machine.
This is perfect for 5L / 10L or 15L machines.

or you can always buy 20L of 7.1 mix on ebay for about £58 in a variety of flavours.
you get a total of 35L of Slush per 5L of of Syrup

But guys is works out just the same price except when you buy online the work is done for you…
Cost for homemade: £2.60 per L plus 2kg sugar and time
    Cost for Bought : £2.90 per L

    Hope my analysis is helpful.
I make my own when I can’t buy the flavours I want..
I even sometimes mix the flossines to get new flavours….

    Have Fun!

    • @Kim, what island? Did you start your syrup business yet, I am looking for a supplier?

  • Have you used a commercial machine for your mix. I am looking for a recipe to use in a commercial slushy machine for a school function. The rental shop charges a lot for the concentrated mix, so I was hoping to make my own. Their mix is a 7:1 ratio of water to mix. It seems as if your mix is 2:1/3:1 once you add water and ice cubes. I suppose I’d just be making strong koolaid for this. Any advice?

    • I have not tried this with a commercial machine, but I am imagine it would work fine. I think that a ratio of 3:1 might be what you are looking for. Good luck!

    • Hey Mary, I’m sure that you found a recipe by now so this is just a FYI that if yiu want to try something different. I have a BUNN frozen drink machine of my own. I use Kool-aid in it but I mix it a little different. I use 3 unsweetened packets of Kool-aid and 16oz of sugar to 1 gallon of water, This gives me a 13% brix mix ratio. A13% mix ratio keeps the kool-aid from freezing to quickly in the machine. My BUNN machine is a two hopper type you see in a lot of convince stores. Each side holds 2.5 gallons of product. We use it during Halloween for the neighborhood kids and they love it.
