Many serious coffee drinkers around the world say that the Technivorm Moccamaster is the best automatic drip coffee maker available for home use. It is not a surprise really. This machine is hand built in the Netherlands and is individually tested to ensure that the heat, speed and quality of the product meet their high standards and the very strict requirements of both the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) for coffee brewing quality. This is something very few coffee makers can claim.

The Technivorm Moccamaster is not known for having lots of features and bells and whistles. It has a total retro look. There is no digital display, timer or the ability to set how many cups to brew on the control panel. Instead, this is a coffee machine that is quite simple and back to the basics. There is just one button – the on/off switch. That’s it! The Technivorm makes coffee, but it makes it really good!

Transcend is a Canadian specialty coffee roaster. They have two stores in Edmonton and an online store as well. They sent me the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 to test out along with some of their freshly roasted coffee. I am running a giveaway of some of Transcend’s excellent quality coffee. There are a few aspects of the Technivorm machine that put it at the top of the class:

Heat – The water is heated to a temperature of 200-205F. This temperature is important to ensure proper flavour extraction from the coffee grounds and to prevent bitterness.

Speed – The Technivorm brews coffee fast! The brew cycle will finish within six minutes and is much faster than most other brewers.

Warranty – 5 year warranty is excellent and will ensure that your investment will last.

the operation of this machine is so easy. Fill the filter basket with coffee grounds, and the reservoir with water. Press the button and after 5-6 minutes, there is fresh brewed coffee ready for drinking.

The stainless steel spray arm has 9 holes to cause a rainfall of very hot water to fall on the grounds. This allows for a full saturation on the coffee grounds. The arm can be easily placed onto the silicone washer at the top of the percolating tube.

Simply press down on the arm to put it in place. I leave it there until it I want to clean the coffee maker. The Technivorm is built so simply, that these pieces come apart for super easy cleaning!

The brew through lid can screw into the thermal carafe. This helps to keep the coffee hot, while still allowing you to pour.

The filter basket uses  #4 cone filters. There is a latch on the basket which determines the water flow. There are three settings – full, half and closed. I used full all the time. Once the coffee is done, it can be switched to closed, so that no there are no late drips while pouring a cup of fresh coffee. This is in place of a ‘pause and serve’ feature.

I used Ndaroini AA coffee from Transcend and ground the beans fairly fine.

After I filled the reservoir with water, I switched the Technivorm on and within seconds, you could see water bubbling up the inner tube and then raining down on the coffee grounds. The machine comes with a lid to cover the filter basket. I kept it off to see how well the water saturated the grounds.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-13

The Technivorm advertises that it can reach temperatures of 200F which is optimal for coffee brewing. I used my Thermapen to check the temperature. It got up to 197F with the lid off the basket. I am sure that if the lid was on the filter basket, the temperature would be even hotter. Obviously, leaving the top open, would release a lot of the heat.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-15

Checking the temperature of the coffee as it driped into the thermal carafe showed that it reached 193F. There was clearly very little heat loss as the water steeped in the grounds.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-17

The percolating tube moves through the middle of the water reservoir, which is typical of most drip coffee machines. This causes the temperature of the water to drop as it moves through cold water all around it. The Technivorm has a double walled tube and this helps to keep the water at a high temperature. It is design features like this that set the Technivorm apart from much of the competition.

As the last of the water falls into the coffee, it is clear that there is excellent saturation of the coffee grounds.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-21

If there is one thing about the Technivorm that I am not a fan of, it is the fact that there is no real spout on the carafe. The top of the carafe has a round lip. Now it can pour out the coffee fine, but I personally prefer an actual spout for easier pouring.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-20

The Technivorm comes with a stopper that can be screwed on. This will keep the coffee hot, far longer than the screw-on mixing tube.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 Product Review-22

At around $300, this coffee maker is not for everyone. If a person purchases low end coffee, like Maxwell House or Folgers, then this coffee maker is not for them. It’s just not worth it. On the other hand, if someone purchases high end coffee from a specialty roaster or maybe even roasts their own, then purchasing the Technivorm is a solid investment. Coming with a 5 year warranty, this machine can be viewed as an investment.

The Technivorm is an outstanding coffee maker. I love every sip that comes from this machine. Obviously, it really does depend on the quality of the coffee beans itself, and the water. But with good quality beans and fresh filtered water, there is not much better than the Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 for brewing a cup of joe!

You can purchase the coffee maker at Transcend’s online store – Technivorm Moccamaster KBT 741 or at Amazon.
