Sous vide is continuing to be one of the fastest growing segments of the food industry and there have been many different sous vide immersion circulators hitting the market over the last couple years. Most of these have come from new companies and one of these machines was the Nomiku. I had the chance to test out the Nomiku Sous Vide Immersion Circulator and I love the simplicity of the machine. Easy to operate, the Nomiku works at heating the water quickly and holding the temperature steadily.
Here is my review of the original machine:
Nomiku has announced that the 2nd generation of their machine is coming. Like the original Nomiku, Kickstarter is being used to crowd fund the project and the financial target has not only been reached, but the $200,000 goal was raised within the first 12 hours of the campaign!
Some popular features in the original Nomiku are returning, like the dial that controls the temperature with a simple turn. I love that the machine clips to the front of a pot for easier access. There are also plenty of new features like a more powerful machine, a single-bodied unit and even wifi. Yes, this new sous vide machine will have wifi and there will be apps for iOS and Android to control the machine from a mobile device. Along with these features, the new Nomiku will be made in the USA.
I had the chance to interview Lisa Q. Fetterman, one of the founders of Nomiku.
Since launching the first generation of Nomiku, what has been your most surprising experience?
Definitely raising $200K in under 12 hours. It’s a good surprise! I’m so grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received on Kickstarter.
How has the foodie community responded to the Nomiku?
The foodie community is vast and I think we’ve only scratched the surface. We hope people who love food will get what we’re trying to do which is make great food accessible through giving people the power to make it in their own kitchens.
What have you found is the most challenging part of marketing the Nomiku?
Education is a huge hurdle. Sous vide is a new method of cooking and it has a daunting name but it couldn’t be easier to do. Just put your ingredients in a bag, push out the air, and cook it in the water bath, done!
This is your second time running a Kickstarter campaign and each have met, and surpassed the goal, with this second campaign reaching the goal very quickly! (Congrats BTW!!) What have you learned about crowd funding?
What I have learned about crowdfunding is that your backers are there for you forever. We have to respect their commitment to us and keep things transparent.
What are the new features in the second generation Nomiku Sous Vide Immersion Circulator?
There are so many! WiFi allows you to cook with the cloud from wherever you ear in the world, that’s so exciting! Now Nomiku is smaller, unibodied, and clips on to the front of the pot. It is also the most powerful home immersion circulator in it’s class. Best of all, we’re moving our manufacturing to the Bay Area so we can design and make it right here in America!
In your opinion, what are some of the greatest benefits of sous vide cooking?
The repeatability! I know if I spend all this money at the farmer’s market I’m not going to screw it up. I’d hate to waste my precious ingredients.
What is your favourite food to cook using the Nomiku?
I’m really into fish these days but it always changes depending on my mood. Fish is so incredibly silky, I’ve never had anything like it before and can’t get the texture through any other method.
Why should someone purchase the new Nomiku Sous Vide Immersion Circulator?
They would purchase the new Nomiku because they love food, adventure, and connecting with others who are passionate about food. We’ll have many top chefs, scientists, and homecooks on our app Tender. I can’t wait to see what happens when amazing food people collaborate!
The campaign in still running on Kickstarter and there are plenty of pledge options to support and back the project.
