Smoky Mesquite BBQ Sauce

I love to smoke food and many times I add BBQ sauce during or after the meat has been in the smoker. Sometimes I want to be able to have that nice smoky flavor even when I do not use the smoker and that was the reason for me developing this Smoky Mesquite BBQ sauce. Sweet and tangy, this is a fairly standard sauce. But, what sets it apart is that I smoke the sauce for a good 3 hours! I used mesquite wood because I wanted a stronger smoke flavor and mesquite is great for that.

This sauce is amazing on burgers, hot dogs, or grilling almost any meat including chicken, ribs and more! It gives the meat that great smokey taste, making you think that the food has been going through that low and slow smoke.

  • This was really good! I made a few changes but it was delicious.
I added a bourbon hot sauce and some cumin, onion and garlic powder and smoked paprika and I omitted the cayenne because my husband doesn’t like too much spice. Thanks for the recipe!

thx. it helped me to put some smoked paprika into this to substitute the smoky flavor. especially handy if you dont wanna to add artificial aromas and need that smoked flavor.
100% raw oganic way is to put this into a smoker, who knows it might work, imho not woth the effort unless you are doing it big.

also one trick from Jamie Oliver:
instead of lemon try orange juice. naturally this gets on the sweeter side, but its up to your preference.

  • I adore homemade bbq sauce. It is so much better than most of the stuff at the store. And this one sounds delicious! I love the idea of smoking the actual sauce.
