The perfect spice rub recipe for grilling steaks using coarse salt, coarsly ground black pepper and dried chili pepper flakes.
Grilled steak…… there is very few other foods that I anticipate more than a perfectly grilled steak. Whether it is a striploin, ribeye, T-bone, filet mignon or other steak, I love to use the perfect rub for grilling steaks.
There are many different ways to grill a steak using rubs, marinades and BBQ sauces, but I prefer quite simple. The rub that I use on steak is quite simple and uses just three ingredients. The main ingredient for the rub is salt. Rubbing a decent amount of salt on a steak just before it goes on the grill does more than just add flavour. The salt and any other seasoning helps to create a nice sear and crust on the surface of the steak. While this provides a wonderful taste on the surface of the steak, it also keeps the juices inside the meat to create a wonderfully juicy steak!

The best salt for rubbing on steak is a coarse salt. I used some Windsor Coarse Kosher Salt. I always keep a box of coarse kosher salt in Windsor Salt has just recently had a brand refresh with a new logo and packaging. While it is a new look, it is still the same great salt product!
To go along with the salt, I use only two other ingredients on my steaks. Fresh ground black pepper and red chili flakes are added to the salt and they further enhance the flavour of the beef. I prefer this minimalist type of spice rub as it does not over complicate the flavours but raises the beefiness of the steak.
While some people like to rub the seasoning on the steak and let it brine for 15-30 minutes, I personally prefer to rub the seasoning on just before steak goes on the grill.
Simple Steak Salt Rub - perfect for grilling any steak!
- 4 tbsp of coarse kosher salt
- 1 1/2 tbsp fresh coarsely ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp red chili flakes
- Mix together the 3 ingredients in a small bowl.
- Preheat grill to high.
- Rub the spice mixture on both sides of the steak.
- Place on the grill and cook for a few minutes per side. Cook until preferred doneness for steak.
